Why Adopt?

You may find your new best friend in an OTTB! Following their career on the track, some of these exceptional athletes are able to go on to become jumpers, eventers, dressage horses or even reliable trail buddies.

Even if you do not adopt from The Exceller Fund, we commend you for looking into the possibility and urge you to check out other local equine rescue/retirement organizations for your perfect match.

How to Adopt

To begin the process, fill out an adoption application and send it to us via email or snail mail. We require references, as well as some personal information on the applicant. Once the form has been received it will be reviewed and an Exceller Fund board member, officer or volunteer will contact you. We do require the application to be completed prior to making an appointment to look at the horses. This part of the process typically takes up to a week once the application is received.

Now comes the fun part! Once the application is approved, we can start seriously considering which horse(s) may be best for you. We will be sure to give you all the details we can on horses that may be suitable and will set up an appointment for you to visit the horse(s). Don’t get discouraged if this part of the process takes some time. We want to be sure we find you the RIGHT match! We also work with other groups, so if we don’t have what you’re looking for, odds are, someone does.

After we’ve found the right horse(s), someone from The Exceller Fund may visit your farm or the place where you plan to board the horse to ensure the facilities are adequate. You must have secured stabling arrangements before an adoption can be finalized.

We know this sounds complicated and time consuming, but we do try to make it as easy as possible for you. Please remember our primary goal is to get our horses into suitable, loving and forever homes.

We do require a small adoption fee, which is non-refundable, on each horse. Typically our fees run between $200 and $800 with a few exceptions. While we can’t really put a price on our horses, we base this fee on the condition and potential of each horse.

Following the adoption, we do require that your veterinarian report to us annually concerning the horse's condition and vaccination history. We will also require that you notify us if you and/or the horse has moved. You cannot sell or transfer your horse without prior approval of The Exceller Fund. Please contact us with any other questions you may have. We are always happy to help!
