With tremendous sadness Cynthia Fleming notified the Exceller Fund that her wonderful Forty-Five was euthanized because of injuries suffered when he was struck by a car after the curious gelding wandered out of his paddock.

Although our retired Thoroughbreds are thriving in this unusually rough winter, the Exceller Fund hay budget is suffering.

Exceller Fund President Gary Contessa, whose rapport with racing organizations and fellow horsemen generates thousands of dollars for the Exceller Fund, will be a guest on the “View From A Broad” radio talk show on Thursday February 18. (July 31, 2009) WASHINGTON—The Humane Society of the United States released a national list of humane resources for horse owners making end-of-life arrangements for their equine companions.

Jet Prospector, a fighter on the track against his rivals and in retirement against various health problems, was euthanized in early January because of severe laminitis. Laminitis, a painful ailment in which the soft tissue in the hoof becomes inflamed sometimes causing the bone to rotate, is the same foot ailment that claimed the life of Kentucky Derby winner Barbaro...

Jane Patton reports that Carson City Kid is a star in the hunter show ring, especially when he has an audience and is a barn favorite. Jane adopted Carson City Kid, who turns 16 in March and raced a remarkable 119 times, two years ago.

The Exceller Fund accepted our newest horse, an unraced two-year-old gelding, who will spend the winter healing from minor surgery at our Badgad, Kentucky facility. This friendly bay was in pre-race training, but was such a poor racing prospect that he never was given an official name. He will be evaluated for riding in the spring.

Bryan’s Account and Our Son Rob, who have been with the Exceller Fund for a number of years, displayed wonderful temperaments when placed in steady retraining this year and Our Son Rob strutted his stuff for a crowd at the Kentucky Horse Park’s annual Adoption Day.
