Here is the essence of a Racing Warrior – 98 starts – earnings of $66,450 – racing until he was 10 years old – the last five years racing at the bottom - $2,500 claiming in Nebraska….14 different trainers in his career.
Beautiful things do indeed come in plain brown wrappers….Roy is small and plain, but probably the kindest of horses…maybe THE KINDEST we’ve known.
We call him "Roy the Dog", a trusting companion. He sneaks out the barely open front barn door only to cruise quietly in the front yard, visiting horses he doesn’t know on a daily basis…. But easily caught and led back to the barn with a rope around his neck.
With a bit of overcrowding at times, and all stalls taken, he is sometimes assigned to the barn aisle way in bad weather, but never disrupts things. He seems to like this arrangement, stopping by each stall to chat…no pinned ears or kicking from anyone…then he eventually settles into his bedding and munches his alfalfa.
While he has stood patiently outside the feed room while his meal is being prepared, he has on several occasions locked his caretaker in the feed room when piddling with the door latch…prompting the installation of a lock from the inside of the room.
A rhinoceros could not love the mud more.
His favorite pasture pal is Bayamo, who towers over him and probably out weights him by 200 pounds. They chase and nip and stand on their hind legs….Roy is always looking for more.
His other pasture pal is a geriatric curmudgeon who ignores him. No doubt Roy is the get along, go along guy, always looking to please.
I think he would come in and watch TV if you let him.
He seems sound and pretty clean legged for the miles he has gone. He is a joy…..we can only hope that the “perfect” person will find him as special as we do.
UPDATE: September 2012 - Roy has been with a trainer for evaluation and we have gotten a fabulous report, as we knew we would. Although he is very green and will require someone with the patience and knowledge to train him (or working with a trainer), he is very willing and kind.
UPDATE: Spring 2013 - Roy has spent a few months with a foster, but has now returned and is looking for a forever home. He has continued with his training throughout the winter and has continued to blossom. He has proven to be a gem on the trail and in the ring... he is the horse everyone is in awe of. No one has a problem looking past the small size and lack of markings once they see this special boy in action. Although, his fluid gaits and sweet disposition are only a small part of what make him so special.
