Tribute To a Fallen Hero

The Exceller Fund is proud to offer this special portrait of Exceller by Richard Stone Reeves! For each lithograph sold through the efforts of the Exceller Fund, the fund will receive 50% of the proceeds.
Each lithograph is signed and numbered by the artist. There are 500 available. Each lithograph has met Mr. Reeves' exacting standard of excellence. The paper on which the countless printing plates were laid is of the finest museum quality. This edition is sure to be one of the artist's most treasured works.
"I first saw EXCELLER in October 1976 at trainer Francois Mathet's yard in Chantilly, France. He was an appealing young racehorse, full of life and eager to please, his large bright eyes surveying everything around him when he was led out to pose. As I did preliminary work for his portrait, commissioned by his owner at that time, Bunker Hunt, the sun came out and the colt's rich bay coat literally glistened.
"My next visit with EXCELLER was in 1978 at Belmont Park where he had recently won the most important race of his career, the Jockey Club Gold Cup in which he defeated two American Triple Crown winners - Affirmed and Seattle Slew. More robust and even better looking than he was in 1976, EXCELLER posed in the beautiful paddock at Belmont, an ideal background for this painting.
"It came as a terrible shock to learn that this heroic animal was killed in a slaughterhouse in Sweden..."
