Depending on the particular talents possessed by these Thoroughbreds, different horses were used in various scenes in the movie. Perhaps one of the most visually and emotionally thrilling scenes was when Seabiscuits trainer instructed the jockey, to let the horse run till he stops. Off they went, through fields and over a stone bridge on what is arguably Kentuckys most beautiful horse farm, Xalapa, with trees in autumnal glory in the background. The horse used in that scene is a Thoroughbred named Rich In Dallas, and he is coming to the Kentucky Horse Park for the summer. On loan to the park from a Thoroughbred rescue organization called the Exceller Fund, Rich In Dallas will greet park visitors from his new stall in the Breeds Barn and will be participating in the Parade of Breeds shows all summer. Earlier this year, the parks own Seabiscuit star, I Two Step Too, was humanely destroyed after a battle with a rare type of tumor. John Nicholson, Executive Director of the Kentucky Horse Park commented, While we still grieve the loss of I Two Step Too, we are grateful to the Exceller Fund for generously allowing Rich In Dallas to spend the summer with us, where literally thousands of park visitors will get to meet and touch a real movie star. He is a very kind horse who will be a big hit with everyone who comes in contact with him. He continued, We also appreciate the Exceller Funds tireless work on behalf of at-risk Thoroughbreds. They have saved many horses lives, and for that they are certainly to be commended. When not occupied with his movie career, Rich In Dallas was racing at tracks across the country, where he won six races from 4 ½ to 6 furlongs. For more information on Rich in Dallas, call the park at 859-233-4303. For information on the Exceller Fund and adoptable Thoroughbreds, visit their website at www.excellerfund.org. The Kentucky Horse Park is open seven days a week, from 9 am to 5 pm. Admission is $14 for adults, $7 for children ages 7-12 and free for children six and under. Admission includes seeing Rich In Dallas and the American Saddlebred Museum. MAY 12, 2005 Letter from the UVA Children's Hospital MAY 9, 2005 RICH IN DALLAS will next be going to The Kentucky Horse Park on Saturday, May 14, 2005. Rich In Dallas will be at the Horse Park this summer until the end of September. He will be in the daily "Parade of Breeds" show and available for the public to see. Information about Rich In Dallas and The Exceller Fund will be told to the audience and additional information about The Exceller Fund will be made available at the Announcer's Booth following each show. The Kentucky Horse Park has expressed its gratitude to The Exceller Fund for helping them continue their connection to Seabiscuit for their busy summer season. The Exceller Fund is loaning Rich In Dallas to the Horse Park in honor of I Two Step Too who unfortunately passed away a few months ago after a battle with rare tumor. The Exceller Fund hopes that when people see the versatility displayed by Rich In Dallas, it can open the door for them to consider providing a second career to other Thoroughbreds when their racing careers are over. For people who may not be able to own a horse of their own, they can consider a donation to The Exceller Fund to help the organization in its mission of "Providing a Future Beyond The Finish Line." sm The Linn's have already taken Rich In Dallas to a local horse show where he won a 5th place and a 2nd place ribbon in his very first show, and they recently took him to a public appearance at the University of Virginia Kluge Children's Rehabilitation Center. After the summer season at the Horse Park is over, Rich In Dallas will be returning with Paul and Kelly Linn to their ReRun facility in Virginia where he will continue to make local appearances. As a racehorse, Rich In Dallas competed from his 3 year old season in 1998 until the age of 9 in 2004. He raced 69 times, finishing first in 6 races, second in 10 races, and third in 12 races. In addition, he picked up a piece of the purse in another 17 races which meant he collected a "paycheck" about 65% of the time that he ran. He took a brief hiatus from racing during 2002 while the movie Seabiscuit was filmed. Dallas' most memorable part in the movie was when he was filmed running through the woods and across a field when his jockey was told to run him "..'till he stops." Dallas was also one of the Seabiscuits used in racing scenes when a quick burst of speed was needed. A quick look at his racing record confirms that he is a sprinting specialist. Rich In Dallas will be taken to the Horse Park by Paul and Kelly Linn. The Linn's will not be returning with an empty trailer. They will be picking up another Exceller Fund horse, Exceller's Easter, from Bethlehem Farm, and will take him back to their farm in Virginia. Exceller Fund members recall that Exceller's Easter was the little gelding that no one wanted back in 2004. CANTER of Southern Illinois was desparately trying to find someone to take this horse before he was sent to auction. He was unraced, untrained, unnamed, and unregistered. His pasterns were too long to withstand the stress of racing, and his immediate future appeared to be the local auction where most horses are bought by meat buyers. His purchase by The Exceller Fund and plans to transport him to Bethlehem Farm were completed over Easter weekend of 2004. Upon arrival at Bethlehem Farm, the women saw a horse that needed a salvation and rebirth of his own. He had never been handled except for being led by a halter, he had never been groomed, he had never been wormed, and his feet had never been trimmed. He did have a remarkable disposition, and the women in the Bethlehem Farm program proceeded to reclaim his life and give him the time and handline to grow into the handsome and willing horse he is now. Since the Linn's have the highest adoption rate in the ReRun program, The Exceller Fund is hopefull that Exceller's Easter will find a loving adoptive home that will bring this Easter story of redemption to a wonderful conclusion. Also - here are links to the local news coverage of the Rehab Center visit. Here is a link to the article that appeared in the Virginia paper Daily Progress: The story was also covered by the local television news. You can watch the local news video from this page. However, the main link from the story does not appear to work. But the "Seabiscuit" link along the right hand side will play the video. (Note - during the filming, Paul Linn reported that Dallas was bothered by the a fly that seemed intent on his groin area.) The Exceller Fund is truly excited and honored to have Rich In Dallas appear at the Kentucky Horse Park for the 2005 summer season.
MAY 5, 2005 A little background - the rehab center provides rehabilitation for children recovering from traumatic injuries (car accidents and the like) as well as diabetes, cancer and other diseases. The hospital even has its own school so the children can keep up with their studies while in rehab. Dallas' visit with the children was set up last month and they were VERY eager to meet him. All total, there were at least 20 children who were able to come outside to visit Dallas. Dallas visited a few others in their rooms! OK, actually he walked up, put his nose on the window and looked inside at them. They were all laughing and waving back from their beds. It was a particularly funny/touching scene, as Dallas was fascinated by the people behind the glass. We spent several hours there as the children filtered through as their tests/shool/treatments allowed. Dallas did great and was a HUGE hit with everybody, even the maintenance man who had to watch in horror as Dallas attacked his manicured lawn. The Charlottesville newspaper and the local TV News station also came out to film Dallas and interview us. A brief explanation of the pictures: First, I apolgize for the lack of pics, as Kelly and I were too busy with Dallas to take many of our own pictures. However, Jane from the center promised us she would send us every picture they have, so maybe they have some special ones. Pic 1: Dallas meets a baby. Pic 2: This boy watched Dallas for the longest time and eventually succeeded in having Dallas take a cookie from his hand. Dallas made him smile. Pic 3: Dallas and a fan. Pic 4: Dallas and Lauren. Lauren has three horses of her own, and in an amazing coincidence is the niece of the woman who won the Breyer Seabiscuit model at Dallas' horseshow! Pic 5: This teenage boy surprised the staff by coming out to see Dallas, then later amazed them by coming back! Who knows - maybe Dallas helped the staff learn something they can then use to help the kids! Pic 6: Dallas and his star Cookie holder again.
