Racing Warrior Humanely Euthanized

Jet was at one of our KY locations for the last several months and has seemed to have a hard run of luck following him for quite some time. He retired from racing with a severe injury to his ankle that prevented him from ever being sound, let alone riding sound or adoptable as anything more than a pasture pet. Following his retirement, he caught one of his eyes on a fence and lost it to the injury. Though he completely recovered from that with no complications, he then got an abscess in his previously injured limb, forcing him to put uneven amounts of weight on his “good” leg. As it often happens, he foundered in his “good” leg due to the added stress. Ever since he has gone down hill in the way of weight and no matter how he has been managed, he has had a lot of trouble walking around his small paddock.

We had hopes of him turning around, but it never quite seemed to happen and so we kept giving him just a little more time to improve. Unfortunately, today he refused to so much as leave his spot in the run in shed, despite his buddies calling him from the barn only 10 feet away where they were munching on their dinner. I have always believed that a horse will let you know when it is time and I am fully convinced that is what Jet did today. The winter had already begun to take a hard toll on him and now he is in a place where he can run freely, something he hasn’t been able to do in quite some time.

A big Thank You goes out to his fosters who kept him as comfortable as possible these last months and who were with him when he was humanely euthanized this afternoon.
